West Des Moines Nutrition Approaches for Degenerated Discs: Broccoli, Aloe and Grapeseed Oil

Who knew? Researchers are an interesting breed. How they think up things to experiment with is a fascination! What would make them to think “broccoli, aloe vera and grapeseed may positively impact disc degeneration” is a wonder to Executive Chiropractic of Iowa and surely to our West Des Moines chiropractic patients, but a good wonder! They may be onto something to deal with degenerated discs which trigger back pain, neck pain, and disruption of life.

PREVENTING AND POSSIBLY REVERSING DISC DEGENERATION

West Des Moines low back pain is very closely associated with degeneration of the intervertebral disc in the spine.  At its basic level, the West Des Moines degenerated disc is recognized for a reduced number of cells and alteration to its tissue and extracellular matrix content. In many studies, rabbit discs are examined as they are like human discs. In one rabbit study, researchers studied the degenerated intervertebral disc and its response to the use of broccoli sprout extract. They thought and their study found that this extract had preventive and restorative influences on degenerated discs. (1) In another rabbit study, grapeseed extracts were applied to degenerated discs. Due to their having anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties as natural flavonoids, grapeseed extracts were tried to see how their inhibitory and anabolic effects would be on degenerated discs. They proved to be restorative and preventive in terms of affecting the degraded disc tissues’ collagen fibrils. (2) In a third study, aloe vera gel was applied to degenerated discs of rabbits. Aloe vera gel halted and reversed disc degeneration. Researchers wrote that there was a statistically significant (a big deal!) gradual reversal of degenerative changes. These changes were seen in the collagen content organization, the nucleus pulposus and annulus fibrosus cell increase, and degree of disc degeneration. (3) Executive Chiropractic of Iowa will keep following these stimulating studies and see how they will translate into human use. Maybe these results will inspire West Des Moines chiropractic patients to eat more broccoli, utilize grapeseed, and find a way to use some aloe vera gel?
