Could a Plant Compound Help Protect Your Spine Discs?
If you've ever struggled with disc-related back or neck pain, you know how much your spinal discs matter to your daily comfort and mobility. Now, encouraging new research is investigating a natural substance called quercetin — found in foods like apples, onions, and berries — and its potential to delay disc degeneration at the cellular level.
WHAT IS QUERCETIN?
Quercetin is a botanical compound known as a flavonoid. It's already recognized for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory characteristics, but two studies published in 2026 dove further into how it may particularly support the health of your spinal discs.
WHAT THE RESEARCH FOUND
The first study, published in Tissue & Cell, found that quercetin preserves nucleus pulposus cells — the cushion-like cells at the center of each spinal disc that act as your body's natural buffers. (1) Researchers found that quercetin works by calming down a specific inflammation pathway and improving a cellular "clean-up" process called mitochondrial autophagy. Put simply, this helps disc cells in getting rid of worn-out components and functioning more efficiently, which may help postpone the degeneration activity.
The second study, published in the Naunyn-Schmiedeberg's Archives of Pharmacology, took a different angle. (2) Using sophisticated genetic analysis, researchers identified that fibrosis — a kind of scarring — in nucleus pulposus cells plays a major role in disc degeneration. They discovered that quercetin appears effective as an antifibrotic agent, meaning it may help stop this scarring process from progressing.
WHY THIS MATTERS FOR YOU
While additional research is necessary before quercetin becomes a routine part of disc care, these findings add to a growing body of evidence that nutrition and natural compounds can have a helpful role alongside gentle, non-surgical spine care like chiropractic treatment. At Executive Chiropractic of Iowa, we believe in a whole-person approach to spinal health — combining hands-on chiropractic care with everyday life activities that support your body's innate healing.
