(1) A recent study of nurses who wore masks and other PPE for more than 4 hours at a time discovered that vision problems affected 47.9% of them as did redness of cheeks/nose bridge/ears, dry mouth, and headaches. (2) A study of healthcare workers focused on the occurrence of headache during COVID-19. 81% said that they acquired new PPE (mask/eye wear)-related headaches. 33% of them described experiencing headaches before COVID. 91.3% of those pre-existing headache sufferers said that increased mask/eye wear equipment affected their headache control and work. (3) Overall headache occurrence due to PPE (mask/eye) was 62% in another report. Working more than 8 hours at a time increased the odds of new headache occurrence. Discomfort, blurred vision, and reduced concentration were other reported issues. Wearing such equipment aggravated pre-existing headache issues and triggered new headache experiences. NEW PAIN ISSUES AND HELP WITH CHIROPRACTIC

According to the American Chiropractic Association, our West Des Moines chiropractic patients are not alone! Chiropractic patients across the country are describing some new pain issues with their neck, shoulders, and upper back during this past year of the pandemic, especially those who wear masks for long hours. Certainly, stress is a contributor to pain in normal life. In these times, it is no surprise that patients are reporting more pain. Masks may well contribute to pain in the neck, shoulders, and upper back. Masks may affect vision. If a mask sits too high, the wearer may tuck the chin to see better or hold the neck in a different way to see better. A better fitting mask may be beneficial. More frequent breaks may help. Stretching more often may help. A walk to de-stress is a terrific option! (5) Your West Des Moines chiropractor knows these issues and is here to help!
